A book so good, I forgot the world was burning

I heard about this book📚 on episode 757 of The Incomparable podcast. It seemed like a nice little distraction and was a nice little adventure.

The book description states that it’s part of a wider universe, but I feel the story is mostly self contained with an option to make it the start of a larger series. The author has even set up a webpage that contains information about the book. I especially like the Notes on influence section.

He even has a video on making the script for the novel.

So check it out if you want to do a little light reading.

Overview

Robin Sloan expands the Penumbraverse to new reaches of time and space in a rollicking far-future adventure. It is eleven thousand years from now. A lot has happened, and yet a lot is still very familiar. Ariel is a boy in a remote village under a wizard’s rule. Like many adventurers before him, Ariel is called to explore a world full of eye-popping discoveries and challenges: unknown enemies, a mission to rescue the world, a girl. Here, as they say, be dragons. But none of this happens before Ariel encounters an entity from an earlier civilization, a sentient, sensitive artificial intelligence with a special perspective on all of human history—who becomes both Ariel’s greatest ally . . . and our narrator. Moonbound is an adventure into the richest depths of Story itself from the creator of the Penumbraverse, Robin Sloan. It is a deeply satisfying epic of ancient scale, blasted through the imaginative prism of one of our most forward-thinking writers. And this is only the beginning.

Updates to the theme: Play-Lab

I’ve switched to another theme so that I could feel that I can make more drastic changes and customizations without worrying about effecting other people.

I’m calling this version 1.4.0 and would like to know what others think.

Key changes in this one are as follows:

  • Change the font to Atkinson Hyperlegible
  • Make the index only show the posts with titles
  • Attempt to remove h-feed from single pages
  • Correct header values on archive page
  • Add view-transition to meta tag in header
  • Change default OpenGraph image to not have words
  • Remove border and filter around <figure>
  • Add margin-top and change line-height on <figcaption>

I’ve got two other major changes that I’m still working on. Really highlights why you should do branching for both personal and professional projects.

Upcoming projects

  • Author page
  • Share buttons using the webshare api
  • Changes to stoot due to Hugo method deprecation

About to see some kids running track.

Race track in the morning. In the background a cellphone tower disguised as a tree.

I’m dislike becoming more and more cynical.

The morning was pretty nice.

Atkinson Hyperlegible Font - Braille Institute

My next design tweak will be to start using the Atkinson Hyperlegible Font for this site.

At Braille Institute, we’ve created a family of hyperlegible™ fonts designed to improve legibility and readability for individuals with low vision. These carefully crafted fonts feature clear, highly distinctive letters and numbers that make reading easier and more accessible.

I’ll probably serve it directly from the site instead of linking it from google or adobe.

Did the CSS naked day and it’s a little weird to see how large some of the assets I’m using are.

Thanks to @Archimage for letting me know that it’s draw a picture of a bird day.

A hand-drawn bird with green feathers, yellow feet, a pink crest, and a yellow beak on dotted paper.

I took this photo this morning. It was just me attempting to capture a still moment before the day begins.

A tree in front of the sunrise.

Itching to write something but just don’t have it in me right now.
