I decided to do a little thought experiment as Apple has an announcement on the 9th where they will most likely reveal when the new operating system will become publicly available.
According to Wikipedia, Mountain Lion was the last release that you had to pay for. It was available through the App Store at $19.99 in 2012 which is the equivalent of a dozen eggs or a roll of toilet paper in the United States as of this writing.
All jokes aside, I have been enjoying more than 10 years of updates to the operating system since then. Not every release equally, but I’m grateful for updates and new features to unlock more from hardware that I’ve already purchased. I feel that this should not be taken for granted as we’ve seen business move to subscription models.
At this moment, Liquid Glass has taken up a majority of my thoughts about the upcoming operating system(s). I understand that there are security fixes and maybe a couple other things, but I can’t name them off of my head.
At this point in time, - after running it all summer- I don’t feel I would pay the $28.13 plus tax for this upgrade.
